Opportunity for blessing!

Ok, POT Class & LifeGroup,

I wanted to send a little update re Elizabeth Williams, the lady you blessed on Sunday with some funds, and also just gave her some love.

Elizabeth has 4 teenage kids at home right now: Tiasa, age 13, a 7th grader who has the sweetest, bubbly disposition; Markel, age 13, an 8th grader who is growing way too fast, also a kind kid who loves sports; Shenikquia, age 16, a sophomore who loves to read and sing, and Gancey, age 17 (who I have yet to meet—he was at a friend’s house when I went over).

Elizabeth moved to Memphis from Chicago in the summer, had a full-time job here until October—but was suddenly laid off when the company shut much of its operations down. Since then she has really struggled to gain employment, she has done (and is doing) odd jobs where she can get them—plus is actively looking for a full-time job. She is behind on some bills because of her unemployment, and especially getting behind on rent and car has been very stressful. But she is resourceful, has begun navigating all the assistance programs out there so she can try and keep her family fed, etc, all the while trying to find a “real” job as well. Yet she is literally living on the edge.

She has been homeless in the past, and has even lived out of a car before. And she is determined to not be in that position again. Her house, though bare, was clean, smelled good. Her kids were also clean, clothes are obviously regularly washed and nothing fancy. When I said bare re the house, I mean bare. No furniture to speak of, no beds, just a mattress in each room. No dressers, no bedside stands, no couch, no TV, no Playstation/Wii, no stereo, no computer… just a couple of tables in the living room with some chairs. Also, there is not one sign of Christmas, not out of choice—there is just no funds for Xmas. No tree, no decorations, no lights, no presents, no carols in the air. I did see a couple of Bibles, and a couple of items that had a religious connotation on a mantel. But no signs that Santa was coming here whatsoever.

Now I am genuinely not trying to manipulate or oversell on any of our heartstrings or emotions. Elizabeth has her past, has made mistakes, and is cautious about how forthcoming she is of her “story”. But I have now seen upfront and personal that she is a mom who loves her kids, is trying to trust God, is willing to work hard, and is petrified of being out in the streets again with nothing and no one. She has NO safety net if she loses her house or car; she has no family or real friends here. Survival totally depends on her.

So how would you like to do a little “Santa” stuff in the name of Jesus for Elizabeth and her family? Nothing huge, but God led her to us, and it just seems there are some things we could do to bless her family a little more, and encourage her as she gnaws and scratches her way out of this situation. Here’s what I am asking, and jump in only if you feel called, ok. I know some of you are already doing some other AMAZING things for some others right now—God bless you.

But what about just a few presents for the kids, and maybe a small amount of cash to spend on food, household items until her government check comes on Dec 31st? Here are her kids sizes: Shenikquia size 9/10 pants, medium shirt, 8 ½ shoe; Taisia 7/8 pants, sm/med shirts, 7 ½ shoe; Markel 13/14 pants, XL shirt, 8 shoe; Gancey size 16 pants, shirt XXL, 10 shoe. (I am assuming these are all kids sizes??? The kids are all skinny.) Then maybe a couple of games, maybe Monopoly, Trouble, Sorry, Uno, plus some decks of cards. Maybe a few books (teen Christian fiction?) and a teen devo book. No video games, no DVDs, no CDs, no TVs, no sound systems. Maybe some $5 gift cards??? But beyond that, feel free to be creative. But this is NOT a call to overdo it, let’s keep it simple. In fact, as for the cash, no more than a $5-$10 from each family max. Elizabeth is not expecting anything, and is not wanting a handout.

If you’ll bring whatever you want, and get it to me and Jeannie, or put it in the resource room upstairs down the hall from the POT room, that would be nice. As for any cash, we’ll just leave an envelope up by the blackboard. And then we’ll make sure on Christmas Day they are blessed by whatever you folks bring.

Ok, jump on this for Sunday ONLY if you can, and only if you feel a call. But no matter what, thanks for all you’ve already done for Elizabeth and her family.

See you Sunday!

Brotherly,

Tom Alexander

UPDATE:

Thanks to everyone for helping with the need that was presented to the class on Sunday. Over $1,000 was raised to assist the family in need. What an awesome demonstration of the giving hearts in the POTS class. It’s easy for us to give when we know the situation and have a personal understanding about the circumstances, but when it just comes from the bottom of your heart, some call it the Holy Spirit, it is so obvious that God is working through each of you and your families. We pray that each of you have a MERRY CHRISTMAS and remember that Jesus is the reason for every season.

God Bless!

From Linda Booth--please help if you can

During our trip to Texas over Thanksgiving, the oil pump on our car went out. This caused our engine to fail. Our car is still in Dallas, waiting for a new engine. The car will not be ready until late next week. I am driving my sister’s car, until ours is ready.

We also have a U-Haul trailer there, racking up $30 per day rental fees. We have now had it for almost 3 weeks – OUCH!! Kathryn & I planned to leave here Saturday afternoon to pick up the trailer, but our “loaner vehicle has fallen through”. I REALLY need to get that trailer back here to stop the charges. It is a 6’ X 12’ closed trailer, half full of furniture.

If anyone would be willing to take me to Dallas and return on Sunday, OR if I could borrow a vehicle to pull the U-Haul, PLEASE call me today. All of your gasoline & other expenses will be paid. I may not be able to answer my cell phone, but one of the girls should be near it all day. My cell number is 219-9959. IF for some reason we do not answer that phone, please call Joe @ 289-2832.

THANKS!
Linda Booth

From Tom & Jeannie...

Hello POT Class, and other friends & family at SVC,
I wanted to let all of you know my position was terminated last Friday. This was sudden and very unexpected. Indeed, I thoroughly enjoyed what I was doing. So Jeannie and I are caught off guard.
But we are choosing to trust the Lord. What we would ask of all of you is your prayers, plus a sense of humor (Mark Hickman can't be expected to provide it all!)
Seriously, we have long "talked" the words of faith--this is one of those moments to now live them. Our times are in His hands, and we are determined to walk by faith. God is in control.
It is SO nice to have a church family like you. We will look forward to seeing you this Sunday. Be a blessing!
brotherly,
Tom A.

Prayer Request Updates

Kenneth Ramsey--

Surgery on Kenneth Ramsey, Stoney’s dad, went well. Doc was able to remove the entire mass in the colon and said the liver looked and felt good too. Will use radiation to remove other nodules that were too numerous to get. Keep the prayers going up!

Barton Spencer--

Hi all,
I've been reminded by a few people that I haven't sent an update in a while! I was waiting for some additional news from my doctor before doing so (regarding scheduling of things) but I'll go ahead and let everyone know where things are!
My last day of radiation for post-brain-surgery is this Friday. That will amount to a total of 13 days where I went in for a radiation treatment. The actual treatment, on a really good day, only takes about 10 or 15 minutes. Sometimes I have to wait in the lobby for a while, or get X-rays, but overall it hasn't taken that long per day.
The only real side effect I think I've had is some fatigue, so I've not been at work for full 8-hour days all that often lately, but no big deal. I'm still having headaches, usually mild ones, from time to time but nothing that keeps me bedridden like they used to! I've been completely weaned off the steroid that they had me on right after surgery - so I'm not eating everything in sight any more. The ice cream is relatively safe in the freezer now.
I meet with my oncologist next week and from there we'll figure out the timing for what comes next. I will soon resume the chemotherapy that got so unexpectedly interrupted in August. This will be to treat the remaining 2 lesions that are in one of my lungs (at least I think it is one lung, I'll check). They may give me another CAT scan before doing that, we'll see.
I don't know exactly when I'll begin the chemotherapy, but I suspect it will be in a couple of weeks or so and will last into January. I'll go in for a treatment every two weeks, and every time I have a treatment I'll take a pump home with me for 46 hours. The side effects will be different, but I'll wait to describe all that once it happens, or doesn't happen, to me. Since I've already shaved my head, I won't have to endure that inevitable side effect anew.
Once I get the info/schedule figured out with my doctor, I'll let you know.
So, aside from the fatigue I'm doing pretty well. Sarah and the kids are doing well - we all have gotten our "normal" flu shots but are waiting to have a chance to get the swine flu shots. Kids are loving school and will be having several school programs coming up soon related to Thanksgiving and Christmas, etc.
Both kids will be trick-or-treating this year as dinosaurs (BIG SURPRISE!... not) - another thing for them to get excited about!
Little Sarah launches out of her bedroom at 6:30 every morning and either begins reading a book or drawing something. John calls out to us a little before or after that time, with a big smile on his face every morning, and is ready to play with his trains until breakfast time. It's very, very nice to wake up to cheery kids every morning! (I realize that won't last forever)
Anyway, more news soon. Thanks, as always, for your thoughts and prayers and emails and cards and everything!! We love you!
Barton and family

Paulette Smallwood--

Paulette has tumors in her legs and back, but they are treatable. Please pray for her and her family as they begin this journey with her.

Preliminary plans now are to surgically remove the mass in the colon ( it has grown slightly since last scan but it’s still less than half its original size)……..then do radiation. MUM needs Tutors

MUM (Memphis Urban Ministry), the organization that Drew and Charli interned for this summer, is needing some tutors once a week. They have tutors come on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 3:30-5:00. They are having a tutor training session this Thursday, Sept. 17th at 4:00 and it goes for one hour. The training session will be held at the Downtown Church of Christ building where the kids helped at this summer on their mission trips. I am going to the training session this Thursday, Sept. 17th, and I plan to try to tutor on Thursdays from 3:30-5:00. I thought you might could get the word out to our Bible class and maybe to Ginger and any others you can think of that might be able to help. They just need volunteers who can help these kids (elementary age) with their homework an hour and a half each week on either Tuesday or Thursday. Check your email for more information.

Prayer Requests for the week of 9/13/09

Requests:

Please remember Carol's friends:

Please add two very special people to your list for me:

1. Cindi Carey (I work with her husband, Dennie, and he’s having a hard time with this). Cindi has 3 tumors in her bladder and is having surgery next week. Dennie asks for all the prayers we can pray.

2. Pat Finan (my boss) has basal cell carcinoma. This is a reoccurrence from last year and this time they are going to have to take a large chunk from his nose area. This goes very close to the brain and eye ducts so several surgeons involved. Then the next day he will have to have plastic surgery to rebuild that portion of his face. He meets with surgeons next week and then it will be scheduled. I have the best boss in the world, so please pray that this will go smoothly.

Update on Emily:

The trip went well, it was very emotional and heart wrenching, but so glad I went. Something said has impacted her. I can tell by things she says in email. So please continue to pray for her soul.

Thank yall so much!!!

Note from Mark

Hello everyone! I know that last week's class was very rushed and I want to apologize for that, but the time spent with the teens was great! It gave us a few things to talk about with our kids. Please have patience with our class over the next 3 weeks and then we will be back to full steam ahead.
I truly believe our class has really grown together over the last few years and I know that God is opening doors for us daily.....to help others meet our Lord! Keep those eyes open and seize every opportunity to tell anyone about the "JOY" that's in your heart!
God Bless

Upcoming classes from Mark, Tom & Stoney

Hello everyone! Our PoTs class has really become a neat thing. We look forward each week to our time together and don't want to do anything to slow the momentum down that we feel has really picked up steam over the last year. But we also know that our kids are very important and our ultimate goal is to help them see Jesus today. As you know, we are going to meet with the teens for the next few weeks. We will be meeting in our regular class room for the first 30-45 minutes and then leaving as a group and going over to the new building for a devotional with the teens. Jim will be conducting this time with the teens. If you don't have teens, please continue to be a part of the devotion with the teens. I, for one, (Mark) am living proof that aunts, uncles, grandparents, and friends can be a great influence in a child's life, especially when the parents aren't really active in church. I have listed below the topcs that Jim will be discussing each week. Make plans to attend and keep this time in your daily prayers.

Aug. 16 - Myth of the Perfect Family

Aug. 23 - Living up to Expectations

Aug. 30 - Parent/Teen Meeting about upcoming year

Sept. 1 - Friend or Foe?

Thanks and see you Sunday,

Mark, Stoney & Tom

David Shockley--PLEASE PRAY

Hi all,

Per a message from Phillip Shockley, the scheduled surgery for David Shockley took an unfortunate turn. They had hoped to remove about half of his stomach to get rid of all the cancer that was left. Unfortunately, when they started the surgery, they found hundreds of small tumors unexpectedly so they closed him back up and he will have to now follow up with his oncologist on a new plan of action. Phillip asked that we "please, please, please pray for his dad". Let's all make this a priority-when we get up, when we lay down, all during our day, let's lift David up in prayer.

In the Lord,

Tom A.
